PlacesThe road to Torre Orsaia
The road to Torre Orsaia leads over a narrow bridge over the torrent Sciarapotamo, one of the main affluents of the Bussento. The medieval town is situated on a green hill in the middle of centuries old Pisciotta olive trees. The stone fountains "dell’Olmo" and "della Scalitta" which are situated just outside the town are witnesses of the local craft industry.
Torre Orsaia
The main characteristics of the village are the remains of the sacral era of the late middle ages: the church San Lorenzo Martire, restructured in the XIX century, the monumental belltower, the episcopal palace and the seminary (Palazzo Vescovile, Seminario), which is today the seat of the Comunità Montana.
The Pergola Fountain is situated in the same square (Fontana della Pergola).
In the higher part of the village we find Carmine's chapel and right next to it the Pergola Fountain (Fontana della Pergola) and the public wash-house (Lavatoio Pubblico), built in 1569 and rebuilt in 1770 under the governor Giovan Battista Scarpitta.
Castel Ruggero and Borgo Cerreto
A bit further down the "Statale 18" there is the village, which was once called Torre Superiore, and is now Castel Ruggero. The impressive Mariosa Palace from the XVIII century is situated there. On the other side of the village the ruins of the cemetery chapel Santa Sofia are found. Only a few steps away from the main square there is a terrasse with a beautiful view.
In Borgo Cerreto in the countryside there is the Cardinal’s Country House Mariosa (Casino del cardinale Mariosa), today "Palazzo Donnabella".
